The project involved a close understanding of the siting board requirements along with the safety issue and needs of the defence force to create a facility that would work for them in the field. As the brief was very general, we worked closely with defence personnel and achieved a facility that has been claimed by many in the defence ranks as “the best they have seen”.
Other issues that had to be considered in the design, was the selection of fitting and fixtures to handle the high PH in the bore water, the issue of natural ventilation opposing security as no care-taker will be on site and the intermittent use of the facility.
Also the construction period was extremely tight i.e. 20 weeks and leading up to the wet season, we progressively staged the design drawing in sections of work, which was needed first and started immediate construction. No work could start on any of the ranges until the road was through.
We had geared ourselves up to handle this and within 5 days of the project starting, we had selected, cleared and prepared the sub-grade of the roads which allowed immediate access.
|
| At tender time we had assessed the recommended path for the road to one site. This had 6 difficult and long flood plains to cross. The design team investigated an alternative route which only needed to cross 1 creek, was 1km shorter, built on a low ridge line and connected to other new roads which gave the defence better control over all 5 ranges and only needed 1 sentry to do it. |
